Wire Processing Services

Mil-Spec Incorporated specializes in customizing orders to the exact needs of the customer. Wires can be dyed, striped, marked, cut to length, stripped, tinned, etched, and twisted in combinations per your specifications. Skilled technicians will conscientiously process each order to assure your complete satisfaction, and Mil-Spec's total in-house capability guarantees that orders are shipped in a timely manner. The bottom line is that Mil-Spec's service is second to none in the industry.

Mil-Spec’s equipment is capable of putting identifying stripes on wire ranging from .023” O.D. to .335” O.D. The striping can include up to three lines and varying thicknesses. All popular colors are in stock, with special hues available on special order. The stripes can be affixed to Nylon, PTFE, FEP, PFA, Tefzel, PVC and polyolefin insulation.

To identify or customize wire, Mil-Spec can mark it with any combination of letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9) plus “arrows” and a “dash” up to 18 characters. The space between the marks is infinitely adjustable. The marking machines can print on wires ranging from .040” to .259” O.D.

CUTTING (only)

Wires ranging from 32 to 8 gauge can be cut to any length from one inch to 999.99 inches in increments of .10 inch. Special equipment is also employed to cut flat material (up to 3.20” x .125”) and round material up to .375” (9mm) O.D. to any length from .020” to 999.99” in increments of .020” or 1mm. Mil-Spec can also cut ribbon cable, heat-shrink tubing, round PVC or PTFE/FEP tubing and other types of linear materials.

Mil-Spec has a multitude of pneumatic and mechanical wire-stripping equipment and offers a wide variety of services. Stripping operations can be performed on both solid or stranded conductor wire from 32 to 4 AWG (4 is stranded only), with the strip length varying by the size of the wire. Fully stripped ends can range from .125” to 20” and stripped sections can be performed anywhere to facilitate splicing. Multiple wires within the same sheathing can be stripped in different lengths. Sections can also be stripped from any interior part of the wire to facilitate splicing. The stripping machines can cut most any type of wrapped or extruded insulation, including PTFE, FEP, PFA, Nylon, PVC, Polyolefin and fiberglass.

Combinations of two, three or four conductors can be twisted together in either a right or left lay. The length of the lay (twists per inch) is adjustable.

It is possible to twist conductors of varying sizes, but there are certain limits as to their combined size. Call us to discuss the details.

Wire can be processed to add lead-free (ROHS compliant) or lead tin to facilitate soldering. A wide range of wire sizes can be processed in this manner. Mil-Spec is in full compliance with J-STD-00ID.

Dip Tinning

To facilitate bonding of PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) and FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) high temperature insulated wire, Mil-Spec offers a chemical/sodium etching process. Note that etching PTFE wire and cable changes the color of the insulator (i.e. white becomes tan, yellow turns into a “mustard” color, etc.).

Mil-Spec uses a proprietary process to permanently dye PVC wire from white to all of the commonly-used colors in industry. Special colors, like pink and tan, are also in stock.
